Dear APWH Parents
So your student is taking a college level class! Good job! You have encouraged their love of learning and they are ready for this experience! Thank you for your support of your student in Advanced Placement World History.
W e will be studying the entirety of world history in just a year (whew!). Because this is a big task, I am requesting that all students purchase their books. No student is required to do so, but owning these books will be of great benefit to them. There are two texts:
The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts
and
Time Lines of World History (DK)
There are several options for purchasing these books- and several price levels.
The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts ISBN0-141-00723-0
Amazon.com (used) aprox. $8+$3 shipping
An Open Book $17.60 (please tell Anne that you are an FHS student to receive this discount)
or purchase it from FHS $22.00
Time Lines of World History (DK)
Amazon.com (used) aprox. $14.50+$3 shipping
An Open Book $24.00 (please tell Anne that you are an FHS student to receive this discount)
or purchase it from FHS $30.00
If a student would like to borrow the books from the school this is fine. They are both paperback (due to budget restrictions), so they need to be very careful with the books or they may be charged a fee at the end of the year.
The AP test will also charge a fee of about $84 for the test (In May). Before all of these expenses seem daunting, I would like to let you know that any student who passes the test with a 3 or higher can receive college credit. At UNC that would be $400.00 worth of credit (with out the books!) Really, it is a bargain.
Other things that you can do to help your AP student.
a. Look over their syllabus with them (they already have them)
b. Ask them what they learned today (They should always have something to tell you from this class)
c. Encourage them to get all their reading done. AP students will have reading almost every night, including weekends and holidays.
d. Provide a quite work environment for them to read and study. AP reading is high-level and sometimes hard to concentrate on. A distraction-free work space will help with this.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at any time. I am excited to work with your family to make this class one of the best experiences your student has at FHS.
Cheers!
